How to View Who Is Connected to Your Hotspot on Android

Hotspots give you quick internet connectivity when you are away from your home WiFi. A hotspot is any location where you can access public WiFi. It’s also a way to share your internet connection with others. For instance, more than one device can use your Android device’s internet connection. You may be using mobile data in that regard, but it gives you the option of using your Android to provide internet to another device.

Use your Android device as a hotspot

It’s fairly simple to use your Android phone or tablet as a hotspot. Here is how to do it.

Step 1: Go to settings on your Android device. Tap on Settings to open it.

Step 2: Select Wireless and Networks, which will usually be one of the top options on your menu.

Step 3: Enable your hotspot. You will usually tap on Tethering and portable hotspot and toggle Portable WiFi hotspot or WLAN hotspot to On. This will let other devices use your Android device internet.

See who is using your hotspot

Step 1: Go to settings on your Android device.

Step 2: Go to Wireless and Networks.

Step 3: Open the hotspot menu by clicking on Tethering and portable hotspot.

Step 4: Tap on WLAN Hotspot.

Step 5: See under “Connected Users” to see the MAC address of users connected to your hotspot. The MAC, or media access control, address is a 12-character set of numbers that identifies your Android device.

You can also view it by going to the hotspot via your notification bar.

Step 1: Pull down the notification bar.

Step 2: Tap on Tethering or hotspot active.

Step 3: Go to “Connected Users” to see the MAC addresses of connected users.

Set a hotspot password

You want to limit how many people can access your hotspot. That’s especially true if you are using mobile data. You don’t want to unexpectedly run out of mobile data or end up paying extra because you went over your data limit.

Step 1: Go to Settings on your Android device.

Step 2: Go to Wireless and Networks.

Step 3: Tap on Tethering and portable hotspot to open your hotspot menu.

Step 4: Select WLAN hotspot or Portable Wi-Fi hotspot.

Step 5: Tap on Set up WLAN hotspot.

Step 6: Type a name into the Network SSID field. People who connect to your Android hotspot will see this name.

Step 7: Select the Security drop-down menu and select WPA PSK or WPA2PSK.

Step 8: Type a strong, eight-character long password and tap Save. Use a combination of numbers, small and capital letters and special characters like “!” to keep your password strong.

These steps will help you use your Android device as a hotspot and do so safely so others can’t use your mobile data.
