How to Enable Google Pixel’s Fingerprint Scanner

How to Enable Fingerprint Scanner on Google Pixel [Pixel 2 / Pixel 2 XL]

Google’s Pixel and Pixel XL come with a fingerprint scanner gesture. There’s also a new app, Fingerprint Gestures, that lets the feature run on other handsets powered by Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

The feature isn’t new. It’s been used on Huawei phones. But this is new for many who are just now experiencing it with Google’s flagship phones. It’s kind of like turning the fingerprint scanner into a sort of a touch pad.

How to Enable Fingerprint Scanner on Google Pixel [Pixel 2 / Pixel 2 XL]:

Step #1: Enable fingerprint gestures

Go to Settings and scroll down until you reach the Device section. Once Devices is open, look down for an option that says Moves.

Tap on Moves and your phone will show you some gestures featured in the Android operating system. One of the more commonly used features you will see as far as gestures is the Swipe for Notifications gesture. You can tap it once to enable it.

When this is activated, you can swipe on the home button once to expand the notification panel. Once you have it open, you can swipe on it again to expand it more and show the Quick Settings display. Swipe up on the fingerprint scanner and it will condense them or turn them off.

This can give you a quick way to get a status update.

Step #2: Program fingerprint scanner

The fingerprint scanner can also be used to turn the phone on. It’s been called the most accurate smartphone scanner.

Make sure your fingers and the screen are both clean before you proceed. Start the feature by going to Settings>Security>Pixel Imprint>Add Fingerprint. You will be asked to lay your fingertip on the screen in different ways including using the tip, laying it flat and changing the angle so that the phone can get as many reference points as possible.

If you have problems, it could be your case. That’s especially true if you registered your fingerprints with the phone before buying the case. You may have to re-do it while the case is on the phone.

Step #3: Option on non-Pixel phones

If you have an Android phone other than the Pixel or Pixel XL and your Android phone has a fingerprint sensor, you may be able to download an app from Google Play that enacts the same fingerprint gestures. Your phone must be running at least the Android Marshmallow or Android 7.1 Nougat operating system.

The Fingerprint Gestures app allows you to use gestures like single tap, double tap and fast tap to control your phone. You can swipe down on the fingerprint sensor to check notifications, tap the sensor to put your phone to sleep or touch your fingerprint sensor and scroll through apps.

Step #4: Pixel “Moves”

As far as your Pixel and Pixel XL, it also has other “moves.” The Jump to Camera move lets you double-click your power button to open your camera app. It works even when your screen is off.

Flip camera lets you twist your wrist twice while using the camera app to switch from using the rear-facing camera to the front-facing camera without having to hit a button.
