How to Free Up iPhone Space by Clearing Documents and Data

We love our iPhones and iPads. We love them so much that we buy apps. We buy more apps. We just buy and both Apple and we love it.

That doesn’t mean your iPad or iPhone loves it, especially if you go overboard. It can lead to a situation where you have to start deleting to find room for more apps and so other functions work well.

So you go search for ways to free up storage space and you come across this “Documents and Data” that’s hogging a lot of space on your iOS device. Sometimes you think wow, that takes up more space than an app.

What is Documents and Data? And more importantly, how can we get rid of it?

How to Free Up iPhone Space by Clearing Documents and Data

Documents and Data Defined

Documents and data come from all over. It’s from cached data, third-party apps, iCloud documents and stock apps. Each of your apps saves something like sign-in info and message history. It’s all there under Documents and Data.

That adds up and can eat up a lot of memory if you let it. Here are some ways to get rid of it.

Delete Documents and Data:

You can delete and restore the Documents and Data app to save on space.

Step 1: Click on Settings.

Step 2: Click on General then Storage and iCloud Usage.

Step 3: Tap on Manage Storage under the Storage subheading.

Step 4: Look through the apps and tap on one with its documents and data taking up more storage space than the app itself.

Step 5: Tap on Delete App on the bottom of your iPhone or iPad screen.

Step 6: Tap Delete App again when a popup menu appears.

Step 7: Go to the App Store, search for the deleted app and reinstall it.

Stock Apps Data

By stock apps we don’t mean stock market apps. Stock apps include Safari, Music, Messages, Mail, Videos and so on. All of these save extra data.

Let’s deal with one of the main culprits to hogging space. The Safari browser. Here’s what to do to clean its history.

Step 1: Open Safari and tap on bookmarks on the toolbar.

Step 2: Tap on the Bookmarks icon in the upper left corner.

Step 3: Tap on back arrows to find your way back to the top-level menu.

Step 4: Tap on History, then tap Clear. You can choose whether you delete history from the last hour, day, 48 hours, or anything ever recorded on your iPhone.

Limit purchases

Following these steps will get you some of the way. If you indeed do need more space because you bought too many apps, you will want to narrow down your app requests. Perhaps three or four on a table or in a living room may be too many.

As you go through to delete Data and Documents, consider whether there are apps you can delete too. You’d be amazed at how much space doing both can clear up.
