How to Reset, Change Pattern Lock on Google Pixel [Pixel 2 / Pixel 2 XL]

Owners of the Google Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones have four options to set the screen lock on their phones. They can choose to unlock their device with a fingerprint sensor, a PIN, a pattern or a password.

While PIN and password are more self-explanatory, a pattern lock may not be for those who haven’t used it before. The pattern feature lets you draw a simple pattern with your finger to unlock your Pixel phone.

How to Set a Screen Lock

First, let’s revisit how to set your screen lock.

To choose a type of screen lock, like pattern lock, a user would:

  • Open Settings;
  • Tap Security under Personal;
  • Tap Settings next to Screen Lock and choose options like automatic lock timing, Power button locking and a lock screen message;
  • Tap Screen Lock to choose which kind of screen lock to use.

Depending on what you choose, you will then have on-screen instructions of how to use the specific lock feature.

What to Do if You Forgot your Pattern

You may set your pattern on your Google Pixel or Google Pixel XL and forget the pattern lock. If you do this, you have to reset the pattern lock.

One of the solutions is to factory reset your phone. This deletes all of your files and data on your smartphone. What to do depends on whether you have your data backed up, which you should do often. But if not, there are other solutions available.

Factory Reset to Reset Password

Again, remember this option erases the data on your smartphone. If you do not have your data backed up, proceed to the next options.

To factory reset your Pixel or Pixel XL:

Step 1: Turn your phone off.

Step 2: Press and hold the Volume Up, Home and Power buttons at the same time until the Android icon appears.

Step 3: Use the Volume Down button to scroll down and select Wipe Data/Factory Reset and press the power button to confirm your choice.

Step 4: Use the Volume Down button to select Yes – Delete All User Data and press the power button to select it.

Step 5: After the device reboots, use the Power button to select it.

Step 6: Your data will be wiped and your phone will be ready to set up again. You can choose another password while you set up your phone.

Use Google Find My Mobile

Google Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones include a feature called Find My Mobile, similar to Apple’s Find My iPhone. It includes a way to temporarily reset the password and bypass your phone’s lock screen option. You will want to register your phone with Google right away so you can use this option.

Step 1: Register your phone with Google.

Step 2: Temporarily reset your password using Find My Mobile.

Step 3: Use the temporary password to bypass the lock screen.

Step 4: Set a new password on your phone.

Use Android Device Manager

You must first have your phone registered with Android Device Manager. This feature also helps locate your device and gives you options as far as erasing the password. You can use Android Device Manager to reset the password by activating the Lock feature. Here is how to do it.

Step 1: Go to Android Device Manager on your computer.

Step 2: Find y our phone on the screen.

Step 3: Click on the Lock and Erase feature.

Step 4: Follow the steps given to lock your phone.

Step 5: Type a temporary password.

Step 6: Enter your temporary password on your phone.

Step 7: Create a new password.

These steps should get you back into your Google Pixel or Pixel XL so that you can select a new password and continue using your phone.
