My iPhone is connected to wifi but no internet access
We love communicating and playing with our iPhones, whether it’s sending a picture, watching a video on YouTube or playing a game. Without an internet connection, though, it’s just a phone. You can take the “smart” out of the equation.
There are times when your iPhone may struggle connecting with the internet. Keep your calm and follow our tips to troubleshoot. Let’s see if we can get you back online.
My iPhone is connected to wifi but no internet access:
Reboot your iPhone and other simple steps
That’s right. It sounds incredibly simple. Just reboot your iPhone. But guess what? Often it works.
Try restarting your router too.
There are other simple steps you can take. Make sure your router is within range and turned on. Is your WiFi turned on? Grab your iPhone, tap Settings>WiFi and make sure it is. Tap the name of your WiFi network to see if a blue check mark is next to it. Enter your password if it prompts you to do so.
You also want to check to make sure your router and modem are turned on and connected.
Check your WiFi network for issues
Look under the specific WiFi network listed on your iPhone and see if it has a recommendation or an alert, such as “No Internet Connection.” You can tap on the network to get more information.
Check settings on your iPhone
Are you using mobile data? If you can’t connect, go to Settings>Mobile Data and make sure everything is in order. If you are traveling go to Settings>Mobile Data>Mobile Data options and make sure data roaming is turned on.
Check your SIM card and carrier settings
Try removing and re-installing your SIM card. Look at the card to make sure it’s not damaged in any way.
Going to Settings>General>About can let you check to see if there is an update that you need to install to keep your carrier settings valid.
Update your iOS
Are you running the most up-to-date iPhone operating system? If not, update it and see if it helps. Go to Settings>General>Software Update.
Reset network settings
Try re-setting your network settings to see if that makes a difference. Go to Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings. This will reset WiFi networks, cellular settings, passwords, and VPN and APN settings used in the past.
Try connecting at a different location
Still no luck? Maybe the problem’s the WiFi network, not your iPhone. Go to a different location or try connecting to a different WiFi network. If you’re in a public place, ask to make sure you are using the right WiFi network. That’s especially important if you’re in an office complex where there may be more than one WiFi network.
Update your WiFi router
Make sure your WiFi router’s updated with the latest firmware and that it supports your iPhone. You may want to contact the router’s manufacturer to make sure.
Try another device
Do you have an iPad or another device handy? Try connecting with that device and that will help you narrow down whether it’s your iPhone or the WiFi network causing the problem.
